Confused Desis

By Avneet Sidhu

The number of people migrating to foreign land these days has been on the increase and almost every family has at least one member who is settled abroad. if you look around you will find most of your friends settled (or unsettled) in America, Canada, Australia or New Zealand.

Many are in the process of leaving the country or planning to. People are surprised at a person who claims he is happy with the life in India and who despite given a chance would not move to another country.

I always dread the visit of such distant relatives from Canada and America who wonder why i would not like to go and settle abroad.

I pity such middle aged ladies who have worked all their lives in a foreign land and have ended up frustrated because they had to work so much, who raised their kids in an un-Indian way as a result of which they are no more sensitive to the needs of their parents.

The worthy ladies, who get just a couple of days to spend in the Indian market, where they go berserk shopping for sarees and salwar-suits, who have this misconception that we Indians are totally free as compared to them, who 'go to work everyday', ladies who grow jealous because of the domestic help we can get in India and fresh food that we eat as compared to their frozen and canned foods.

What makes me wonder is that given a chance, these people come running to india and even
then lecture those living here on the benefits of being abroad. I simply despise it when they call us idle and expect us to take them shopping, which is the sole purpose of their visit. These people are living a life of utter confusion and backwardness.

Being in minority abroad, their views about religion are not liberal at all and wonder why do people here worship many religions.

Those who get a chance to be in India frequently are better off than the ones who visit once in
ages. The latter need to know that India is a beautiful place to live with all the ways of the modern world.

The younger generation too needs to see the clear picture, who are lured by the student
visas that every country is providing at ease, leaving them confused at the end.
