Bathinda, April 2
In a goof-up, the officiating Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the Central University here has been put on election duty as district presiding officer. The VC is equivalent to state Chief Secretary.

The officiating VC, Prof P Ramarao, has asked the District Returning Officer to exempt him from this duty.

Some senior professors have been given the task of a section officer, usually assigned to Class-II or Class III officials. District Returning Officer KK Yadav blamed the university staff for the goof-up.

"We ask all departments to give the names of employees to be put on election duty. The university staff may have filled the names of all staff members, including that of the VC and those re-employed after retirement." He said the duty list would be rectified soon.

The Election Commission had recently ordered that those retiring on March 31 could not be asked to perform election duty. A senior professor said the duty list had come as an embarrassment to him and his colleagues.

"We have requested for requisite changes in the duty list," he said.

Member of Parliament Harsimrat Kaur Badal is seeking a re-election from Bathinda against Manpreet Badal, Congress- PPP candidate.

The Central University is located on a temporary campus on the Bathinda-Mansa road. It's campus is coming up at Ghudda, the ancestral village of the Badals.
